Am I Behind is the Wrong Question

“Am I Behind” is the Wrong Question

You’re Not Behind. You’re Right On Time.

I was recently looking for an attorney. Two names came to mind—one had retired, and the other had merged into a larger firm.

Which got me thinking about life stages and how we move through them in different ways. One woman I know is still working as a realtor in her 70s. It’s not about professions. It’s about choices—and how those choices can look different for everyone.

This comes up a lot in conversations I have with women.

A lot of women ask me:
“Am I behind?”

Sometimes it’s not really about being behind, but about feeling unsure—or maybe a little fearful—about your money situation.
Or comparing your path to someone else’s. (You know what they say: comparison is the thief of joy.)

It’s possible you wish you had started saving sooner. Or maybe you’ve made decisions you’d do differently now.

But here’s the thing:
👉 The only place you can start is right where you are, right now.
✨ You’re not late. You’re right where your next step begins.

And when you get clear on what you want, things start to shift.

It doesn’t take a perfect plan.
It takes an open conversation, with room to share where you are and where you want to go. A conversation grounded in empathy, not judgment.

💬 Money should never be a source of shame.
🔑 It should be a tool to build what’s next.

So maybe the more empowering question is:
“What do I want, and how can I use money to help me get there?”

If that resonates, and you’re ready to take action, here are 5 simple steps you can take to start:

“What do I want, and how can I use money to help me get there?”

If that resonates, and you’re ready to take action, here are 5 simple steps you can take to start:

1️⃣ Write down what you want your life to look like in 3–5 years.
No numbers, no limits, just vision.

2️⃣ List your current money questions or worries.
Getting them out of your head is a powerful first move.

3️⃣ Review your past spending—not to judge, just to learn.
See where your money’s been going and what it’s been supporting.

4️⃣ Pick one financial habit to focus on for the next 30 days.
This could be tracking your spending, saving a small consistent amount, or checking in weekly.

If you’d like a structure to follow for your money check-ins, I’ve put together a guide and blog post to help you get started:

5️⃣ Talk to someone you trust about where you want to go.
You don’t need to figure it out alone. A conversation can shift everything.

Just a reminder: you can’t take action from the past, you can only take action right now.
