22 Mar Groundwater – Making the Invisible Visible
March 22nd is World Water Day 2022!
Started in 1993, this annual United Nations observance celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people living without access to safe water. This year’s theme is Groundwater – Making the Invisible Visible.
I’ve avoided any kind of weed killer for a long time, mostly to protect the bees and other insects. Groundwater pollution is another good reason to avoid toxins in the yard and home; and to responsibly recycle what you might have used previously.
According to the World Water Day.org website, “Groundwater pollution is a particular problem that can take decades or even centuries to recover from.” and “Almost all of the liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater, supporting drinking water supplies, sanitation systems, farming, industry and ecosystems. In many places, human activities over-use and pollute groundwater.”
A core focus of World Water Day is to inspire action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.

If you want to know more about how pesticides pollute our groundwater, this article from the U.S. Department of the Interior explains it all, with great visuals. Pesticides in Groundwater | U.S. Geological Survey (usgs.gov)
