Know Where You’re Going

And that there may be some detours along the way…

Last week, I was on an advisor call, and our guest speaker was author Brad Stulberg, who talked about his most recent book, “Master of Change, How to Excel When Everything is Changing Including You.” One of the discussion points used mountain climbing as a metaphor for the planning work we do as advisors.

A good mountain guide has a very good plan for the day with lines drawn on the map, and although the map is based on their years of experience and expertise, no trip up the mountain is ever the same. If a storm rolls in, they must be flexible and aware enough to make appropriate adjustments rather than defending a map that no longer matches the new reality.

Unexpected events and life changes are why planning is not a ‘one-and-done’ process. An initial plan can clarify and set some essential guidelines and actions to follow, but life is not a straight line. It’s helpful to review and update your plan regularly. Like a good mountain guide, don’t be afraid to adjust the map along the way.

The path from Current Reality to Goal may be winding
