World Water Day 2023: Accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis

March 22nd is World Water Day 2023

Started in 1993, this annual United Nations observance celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people living without access to safe water.

A core focus of World Water Day is to inspire action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. For 2023, World Water Day focuses on accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis, with UNESCO as the lead UN agency.

According to UNwater.org, “Currently, the world is seriously off track on SDG 6. The latest data show that governments must work on average four times faster to meet this Goal on time. ”

Not sure how you can help? Below are a sample of action items suggested by un.org, with the full set found at The Lazy Person’s Guide to Saving Water – United Nations Sustainable Development.

  • Turn off sleeping tech. Currently, 90% of power generation is water intensive. Turning off our devices when we’re not using them means less energy needs to be produced.
  • Shop sustainably. A typical pair of jeans takes 10,000 litres of water to produce, equal to what a person drinks in 10 years.
  • Take five-minute showers. With 44% of household wastewater not being safely treated, taking shorter showers is a great way to save this precious resource.
  • Protect nature. Plant a tree or create a raingarden – use natural solutions to reduce the risk of flooding and store water.
  • Choose a plant-based meal. It typically takes between 3,000 and 5,000 litres of water to produce 1 kg of rice, 2,000 litres for 1kg of soya, 900 litres for 1kg of wheat and 500 litres for 1kg of potatoes.
